Witnesses testified at a congressional committee on Thursday that Donald Trump ignored requests from his children and other close aides to urge his fans to halt the violence as he sat for hours watching the attack on the U.S. Capitol on live television on Jan. 6.

The House of Representatives Select Committee used its eighth hearing this summer to go into detail about what members claimed was Trump’s inaction for the 187 minutes between the conclusion of his vehement speech at a rally encouraging supporters to march on the Capitol and the release of a video telling them to go home.

According to Democratic Representative Elaine Luria, “President Trump sat at his dining table and watched the attack on television while his senior-most staff, closest advisors, and family members asked him to do what is expected of any American president.”

Aides and security personnel from the White House testified on camera about the day’s events before the panel.

In the recorded testimony about Trump’s activities, Pat Cipollone, a former White House attorney, was bombarded with inquiries, including: Did he call the secretary of defence? the general counsel? The Homeland Security director? Cipolone responded to each question with “no.”

Don Jr., the president’s eldest son, pleaded with Mark Meadows, the chief of staff, in a text message, “He’s got to condemn this garbage ASAP.” If things worsen, they’ll try to ruin his entire legacy.

As Vice President Mike Pence met with lawmakers, the Capitol was attacked, resulting in numerous fatalities, more than 140 police officers being hurt, and a delay in certifying Democratic President Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 election.

Trump had little interest in ordering the rioters to disperse, according to Representative Adam Kinzinger, one of the committee’s two Republicans.

According to Kinzinger, “President Trump’s goal was being served by the mob, so of course he didn’t intervene.”

Trump continues to play with the idea of running for president once more in 2024 while maintaining his support among Republican voters. However, a Reuters/Ipsos survey released on Thursday revealed that since the hearings started six weeks ago, his support among Republicans had marginally declined. A recent poll found that 40 percent of Republicans now hold him at least somewhat responsible for the unrest, up from 33 percent when the congressional hearings were just beginning.

Trump continues to falsely assert that he lost due to rampant fraud while denying any involvement. In a statement on his Truth Social social media platform during the hearing, Trump publicist Liz Harrington said that the proceedings were “as false and fraudulent as Joe Biden – they can’t accomplish anything without a teleprompter.”
