UN demands a ceasefire in Libya following violent clashes

After a day of fatal fighting in the nation’s capital Tripoli between rival political factions, the UN has demanded an immediate end to hostilities in Libya.

The Tripoli health ministry reported that during the battle, at least 23 individuals were killed and numerous others were injured.

Young comedian Mustafa Baraka was among the fatalities, an official claimed.

Since Col. Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in a NATO-backed rebellion in 2011, Libya has been in disarray.

Despite this, the nation had had a period of relative peace during the previous two years.

On Saturday, the military of the internationally recognized government attempted to rebuff a convoy of militias loyal to Fathi Bashagha, who is recognized as prime minister by a competing eastern parliament.

In many parts of the capital, there were reports of explosions and small-arms fire. All over the city, black smoke could be seen rising.

According to emergency services, several hospitals were affected. Additionally, residents of neighborhoods close to the violence were evacuated.

The UN’s Libya mission demanded an immediate truce, claiming that the combat had included “the indiscriminate medium and heavy shelling in civilian-populated neighborhoods.”

With free healthcare and free education, the oil-rich nation formerly boasted one of the greatest standards of living in all of Africa.

However, the stability that fueled its wealth has been destroyed, and since 2011, Tripoli has experienced repeated clashes between opposing factions.
