Boat flip in New Zealand
A birdwatching boat that capsized in New Zealand, probably after hitting a whale, has claimed the lives of five passengers.
On Saturday in Goose Bay close to the village of Kaikura, the boat capsized with eleven passengers on board, the majority of them were members of the birding group.
Police only confirmed the incident and declined to comment as to what may have caused the mishap.
But Kaikura’s mayor, Craig Mackle, told reporters that he thought the boat had struck a whale that had surfaced.
According to Mr. Mackle, the bay’s conditions were “ideal” at the time, and authorities believed the whale had surfaced beneath the ship and turned it over.
He said that there would have been a noticeable hole in the 8.5-meter (28-foot) boat if the boat had struck any debris, such a log.
At a news conference, Mr. Mackie said, “This is a horrible tragedy that affects many lives, not least of all families and loved ones.
“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who helped in the rescue and recovery. In such a horrific situation, the best outcome is being able to return everyone home.”
Despite declining to address the notion, Sergeant Matt Boyce acknowledged that the occurrence was “unusual”.
He said that everyone who had survived the tragedy, including the captain of the boat, had been transported to the hospital and later released. Minor wounds were sustained by one survivor.
A group of bird watchers from all around the country is thought to have gathered on the ferry, and they were among the passengers.
According to Vanessa Chapman, who assisted in the rescue, when she arrived she could see someone sitting on the capsized boat waving their arms.
She claimed that the rescue involved three helicopters.
Fans of marine life flock to Kaikura, where a variety of local businesses provide boat cruises and helicopter rides to watch whales and dolphins.
Even while Mr. Mackle told the Associated Press that such mishaps are unheard of in the area, he expressed concern about a collision due to the recent increase in whale activity.
Five British tourists died in Canada in 2015 when a whale-watching boat capsized after being hit by a wave.
