In a ceremony on Sunday, King Charles III, Australia’s first new king in 70 years, was solemnly installed as the nation’s head of state.

The announcement was made by Governor-General of Australia David Hurley at Canberra’s national capital. On Sunday, a number of proclamation ceremonies will be held in state legislatures all around the nation.

On September 22, when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has returned from Britain, where he will attend the Queen’s burial, a national day of remembering will be conducted. On that day, which has been designated a one-time public holiday, a memorial service will also be held.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia 16 times while serving as head of state.

On September 11, 2022, in Canberra, Australia, Governor-General David Hurley officially proclaimed King Charles III as the sovereign of Australia.

“It was apparent Her Majesty retained a special place in her heart for Australia from her memorable first trip to Australia, the only reigning sovereign to visit,” Albanese said in a statement on Friday.

In a televised ceremony on Sunday, neighboring Commonwealth nation New Zealand likewise formally recognized King Charles III as its head of state.

Queen Elizabeth served the people of New Zealand with steadfast loyalty for 70 years, according to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

“For the vast majority of New Zealanders, she is the only monarch we have known, and so upon her death, we enter a time of change,” Ardern said.
