Georgia judge grants early voting in the Senate runoff on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, favouring Democrats.

• The decree was issued during a brief legal dispute about the Dec. 6 Senate runoff between Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker between the office of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and the Democratic Party of Georgia.

An important victory for the Georgia Democratic Party and Sen. Raphael Warnock’s campaign came on Friday when a Fulton County judge ruled that the Secretary of State cannot forbid counties from holding elections on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.

The decree was issued during a brief legal dispute about the Dec. 6 Senate runoff between Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker between the office of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and the Democratic Party of Georgia.

Republican Raffensperger had argued that because of changes to Georgia’s election laws, there could not be early voting on November 26, the sole Saturday when Georgians would have been able to vote in the closely contested race.

Judge Thomas A. Cox ruled in favour of the reasons made by Democrats and Warnock’s campaign in a lawsuit contesting Raffensperger’s decision late on Friday afternoon. The judge found that the plaintiffs, their members, constituents, and their preferred runoff candidate would suffer irreparable harm if the Saturday vote wasn’t held.

Raffensperger’s office spokesman Mike Hassinger stated, “We disagree with the court’s judgement and look forward to a swift appeal.”
