Prior to this week’s midterm elections, both parties actively courted Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Nevada, a highly competitive swing state, but Democrats ultimately won the group’s support.

One of five states where Asian Americans make up 10% of the electorate overall is this one. They are also growing in stature as a voting bloc, favouring Democratic candidates by a margin of more than 60%, according to one exit poll.
According to early exit poll data from the Asian American Legal and Defense Fund (AALDEF), Democratic candidates won the support of the electorate in races for the House, Senate, and governor. According to Jerry Vattamala, the head of the democracy programme at AALDEF, polling is conducted predominantly in urban areas, which may result in underrepresentation of conservative, suburban, and rural voters.

However, experts argue that even in close contests, the group’s significance shouldn’t be undervalued. Asian Americans contributed to Rep. Susie Lee’s victory in the 3rd Congressional District, where she received little over 1,700 votes, according to a poll taken on election day by the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund. They supported her at 47%. 43% of voters backed Republican candidate April Becker.

According to experts, the left-leaning electorate can be attributed to elements like policy interests, labour issues, and the moderate nature of the local candidates. Koo claimed that, especially in comparison to previous elections, both parties made major efforts to appeal to Asian Americans.

There were plenty of traditional Filipino dinners, for instance, where candidates dined together at buffet-style tables. Other times, candidates would attend neighbourhood gatherings or FaceTime neighbours to establish connections. Koo also mentioned that some candidates have sent out in-language postcards and other, more culturally appropriate communications.

The majority of people now understand that in order to engage the Asian American community, you must reach out to them through events that are microcosmic of Chinese American culture while also engaging the Vietnamese American community, Koo added. Although there are gathering places for Asian Americans, they are frequently divided by ethnicity.

But Vattamala asserted the Democrats most likely succeeded in winning, in part because of the political objectives of the neighbourhood. The top issue for voters, as determined by the exit survey conducted by his firm, was health care, which tends to push people to the left, he claimed. Still, the margin was significantly narrower in several regions of the state. Others warn that the parties will need to change in order to win the support of the voters over the long run due to shifting demographics and stark generational disparities.

According to Amy Koo, assistant director of outreach at the Asian Community Development Council, a nonprofit organisation based in Las Vegas, “there are first-generation, second-generation, and people who have been born and raised here who will end up becoming voters in the state in the next 10 to 20 years.”

What are the items that they’ll be looking for… Which party and which campaigns will invest in Asian American organisation will determine this.

Nevada has the third-largest AAPI electorate in the nation, with a growth rate of 167% over the last two decades. The majority of voters are Filipino Americans, who traditionally have tended to lean left in national polls but are more conservative than other Asian American ethnic groups.
