ISIS says that its leader has died and names his replacement
“This operation was done by the Free Syrian Army in the Syrian province of Dar’a,” it said in a statement, adding that while it was “another blow” to the group, “ISIS remains a threat to the region.”
ISIS’s media arm, al-Furqan, released an audio message from an ISIS spokesman announcing the death of the group’s leader, who was chosen in March. The message didn’t say who killed the group commander or where, though.
In the message sent out Wednesday, spokesman Abu Omar al-Muhajer said, “Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al-Qurayshi was killed while fighting against the enemies of God.”
ISIS said that Abu al-Husain al-Husaini al-Quraishi would take over. We don’t know much about him, but the group called him a “old fighter” without saying anything else about him.
ISIS chose the dead leader after US Vice President Joe Biden said Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi had been killed in a military operation in the northwest of Syria.
Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, Abu al-predecessor, Hasan’s was killed in a US counterterrorism raid in northwest Syria in February. As US forces got close to his compound, Qurayshi blew himself up.
The raid was the biggest US operation in the country since the operation in 2019 that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. It happened when the group was making a comeback in Syria and Iraq.
In January, more than 100 ISIS fighters attacked a prison in the northeast of Syria. They did this to try to free ISIS members who were being held there. At least 200 prisoners and 30 security officers were killed in the fights that broke out after the jail break was stopped.
