  • Sanctions against three senior North Korean officials connected to the nation’s most recent missile launches have been put in place by the US and its Asian allies.
  • This year, Pyongyang launched a record-breaking 60 ballistic missiles and conducted several intercontinental ballistic missile tests.
  • According to reports, Jon Il Ho, Yu Jin, and Kim Su Gil “played key roles” in the development of the weapons.

Sanctions have also been imposed by the EU, South Korea, and Japan.

Western nations have long imposed strict restrictions on North Korea. All US-based assets owned by North Korean officials will be frozen as a result of these new measures. They won’t be allowed to do business with any US companies or people.

The US State Department said in a statement that “today’s steps have been implemented in close collaboration with the Republic of Korea and Japan and further align our policies with our EU partners on the global DPRK threat.”

These actions demonstrate our ongoing commitment to fostering accountability in response to Pyongyang’s escalating number, size, and variety of ballistic missile launches.

On November 18, North Korea conducted its most recent missile test, according to the defence minister of Japan, who also claimed that the country had fired a ballistic missile with adequate range to strike the US mainland. According to Tokyo, it fell into the water some 210 kilometres (130 miles) west of Hokkaido.

Between 2006 and 2017, Pyongyang carried out six nuclear tests, and it has apparently finished making ready for a seventh test. According to experts, it might take advantage of the occasion to test a small nuclear bomb. Additionally, they claim that North Korea is enhancing its conventional military capabilities and short-range missile arsenal.

Under Kim Jong-un, who has oversaw much of the recent progress of the country’s weapons programme and four of the six nuclear tests to far, the nation has grown more assertive.

Recent launches, according to a US Treasury statement, “demonstrate the need for all countries to fully implement UN Security Council resolutions, which are intended to prevent the DPRK from acquiring the technologies, materials, and money Pyongyang needs to develop its prohibited WMD and ballistic missile capabilities.”

These restrictions, according to some American observers, are merely symbolic and have not affected Pyongyang’s behaviour.

“Sanctioning North Korea is entirely up to us (the US). But in order to have a significant impact, we should also deny mainland Chinese institutions access to US dollar correspondent banks “consultant at Park Strategies Sean King said.
