Chris Hipkins set to replace Jacinda Ardern as New Zealand PM

On Thursday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that she did not have “enough in the tank” to govern.

On Sunday, the House of Representatives Labour party must support him to become leader. The penultimate step before he takes over.

If he gets that support, Ms. Ardern will formally resign to the governor-general. He will appoint Mr. Hipkins prime minister on behalf of King Charles III.

If he wants to maintain his position as leader after the election in 2023, however, he will have a difficult time doing it.

According to the most recent surveys of public opinion, Jacinda Ardern’s popularity as New Zealand’s leader has reached an all-time low as a result of rising inflation and a widening gap between the rich and the poor.

They also suggested that support for the country’s Labor Party was at a similarly low level.

Ms. Ardern, who at the age of 37 became the youngest female head of government in the world. She took office in 2017, stated that the previous five and a half years had been the “most fulfilling”.  When she made the announcement of her resignation. However, she went on to say that being the leader of the country during a “crisis” had been challenging for her. She cited the fact that the Covid epidemic, the Christchurch mosque massacres, and the White Island volcano eruption had all taken place during her tenure as prime minister.

The seventh of February will mark the end of Ms. Ardern’s tenure as Prime Minister.which she has held for the past five and a half years.

The announcement of Ms. Ardern’s departure was met with a variety of responses.  Some people speculating that she was “running away before getting kicked out.”

Sam Neil, a renowned actor from New Zealand, stated that Ms. Ardern had been subjected to “disgraceful” behaviour at the hands of “bullies” and “misogynists.”
