RIYADH: His Excellency Mr Salman al-Dosary has been appointed new Minister of Media of Saudi Arabia.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud made the appointment in a royal decree.

Al-Dosary is a well-known figure and representative in the Kingdom’s media industry, having been editor-in-chief of Asharq al-Awsat newspaper from 2014 to 2016. He replaces Majid al-Qasabi, who has been acting Minster of Media since February 2020.

A separate decree issued appointed Lieutenant General Muhammad bin Amer al-Harbi as Deputy Chief of the General Intelligence Directorate.

Ibrahim al-Sultan was also appointed as Minister of State and a member of the Council of Ministers, and Rakan al-Tawq was made assistant to the Minister of Culture.

Abdulrahman al-Harkan was made governor of the General Authority for State Real Estate, and Ismail al-Ghamdi was appointed Assistant Minister of Human Resources and Social Development.

Al-Dosary, who hails from Al-Khobar in the Eastern Province, is holder of a bachelor’s degree in management and economics. Before becoming a journalist, he worked for the Ministry of Education.

Later, he served as editor in chief of the pan Arabic daily London-based Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Eqtisadiah business daily which focuses on economic and finance, Arrajol magazine, and The Majalla magazine.

He started his journalism career in the Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG) in 1998 until present. He joined Asharq al-Awsat as its Bahrain correspondent in 2004, and was promoted to the position of Managing Editor in the UAE in 2006.

In Dec 2009, Al-Dosary was appointed assistant editor-in-chief of Asharq al-Awsat in its main offices in London, before he was appointed chief editor of Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper in 2011. He became editor-in-chief of Asharq Al-Awsat on 1 July 2014 and served till 23 November 2016

Al-Dosary held the position of chief editor of the Arabic-language al-Rajol magazine, published by the SMRG.  He contributed enormously to the magazine’s increasing popularity in the Middle East region and worldwide.

In 2014, Salman Al-Dosary was appointed chief editor of The Majalla, a monthly political magazine published in London in both Arabic and English.
