Authorities in South Australia are conducting a search for the body of a man believed to have fallen victim to a shark attack.

The incident occurred as the 55-year-old was surfing near Granites Beach, situated south of Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, during the morning hours of Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses reported witnessing the attack, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and local volunteers who are scouring the area by air and water.

This marks the third serious shark attack in South Australia this year. In a separate incident in May, a surfer lost his life approximately 120 kilometers from Streaky Bay, while another surfer experienced a non-fatal attack earlier this month.

The specific type of shark involved in the attack remains unclear, but witnesses have described it as being over 4 meters (157 feet) in length.

Residents in the area, such as Phil McEvoy of Streaky Bay, mentioned hearing sirens for an extended period in the morning, leading them to suspect that something was amiss.

The sirens appeared to be heading toward the back beach area where the surfing activities were taking place.

According to reports, the victim was one of six surfers in the water at the time, and he had ventured out farther than the others.

McEvoy suggested that an influx of surfers and the fishing season might be contributing factors to a potential increase in shark presence in the area.

The waters off South Australia’s west coast are known for their shark population, and experts have cautioned that an uptick in shark sightings does not necessarily indicate a rise in their numbers.

Granites Beach is situated approximately 700 kilometers (434 miles) from Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.
