China’s defense ministry has strongly criticized the U.S. Defense Department’s annual report on China, accusing it of distorting China’s security policy and military strategies.

The Pentagon stated that over the coming decade, the People’s Republic of China will significantly modernize, diversify, and expand its nuclear capabilities, shedding light on China’s national ambitions, including its defense policy and military plans in its report to the U.S. Congress.

The Pentagon’s report indicated that China currently possesses more than 500 nuclear warheads and is projected to have over 1,000 by 2030.

Furthermore, it suggested that China would employ new fast-breeder reactors and reprocessing facilities to produce plutonium for its nuclear arsenal, despite publicly claiming these technologies are intended for peaceful purposes.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian expressed “strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition” to the report, asserting that it “exaggerates and sensationalizes the non-existent ‘Chinese military threat’.”

Wu emphasized that China’s military development is focused on preventing conflict, safeguarding national security, and promoting global peace, without targeting any particular nation.

Tensions between China and the United States have escalated recently, with disputes over global and national security issues, military activities in the South China Sea, and the Taiwan question, which China considers a part of its territory.

The Pentagon’s 2022 assessment highlighted China’s increased pressure on Taiwan through diplomatic, political, and military means.

A spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office criticized its content, particularly regarding the Taiwan issue, during a media briefing responding to the U.S. report.

Wu from China’s Defense Ministry acknowledged the importance of military-to-military relations in Sino-U.S. ties but also noted that obstacles in these relations are often initiated by the United States.

Wu accused the United States of creating difficulties and hindrances while simultaneously expressing a desire to manage crises and enhance communication with China.

This latest exchange of statements comes just days before China hosts foreign defense officials at the 10th Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, scheduled for October 29 to 31.

This event follows China’s earlier refusal of a meeting between the defense chiefs of both countries, and the United States accepted China’s subsequent invitation to the forum.
