China’s Toddler Mauling Triggers Dog Crackdown
Chinese authorities have initiated a crackdown targeting stray, unregistered, and “oversized” dogs, following a recent vicious Rottweiler attack on a two-year-old girl.
However, this move has sparked widespread criticism, as reports of dogs without owners being rounded up and sometimes euthanized have emerged.
In the shocking incident, the toddler suffered severe injuries, including a ruptured kidney, fractured ribs, and lacerations.
Disturbing footage shows the mother attempting to protect her child, but the Rottweiler managed to snatch the child before being driven away.
The dog’s owner was subsequently arrested.
The crackdown has raised concerns and backlash on social media, with various distressing stories coming to light.
Instances include unauthorized killings of dogs by security guards and landlords and a controversial incident where a small, stray dog was captured and killed on a university campus.
Chinese celebrities have also joined the discussion, expressing their disagreement with the nationwide crackdown initiated in response to the initial attack.
While China has grappled with the issue of stray dogs for some time, it is important to note that the Rottweiler involved in the attack was not a stray but unleashed within a housing compound.
Despite statements from officials in several provinces about euthanizing captured stray dogs, some cities like Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, have opted not to kill them to quell public outrage over perceived animal cruelty.
To address the problem at its source, local governments in certain provinces are distributing free leashes.
Additionally, some localities are implementing regulations about designated hours for dog walking and encouraging owners of medium or large dogs to use designated boarding facilities.
The situation underscores the varying pet ownership regulations across different localities in China and the lack of robust animal cruelty laws, leaving pets vulnerable to mistreatment.
