German politician detained after complaining about Nazi slogans
A German politician, Daniel Halemba, a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has been arrested on charges of allegedly displaying Nazi symbols.
The arrest came after repeated instances of “Sieg Heil” chants were reported emanating from the headquarters of a student fraternity to which he belongs.
Halemba, aged 22, had recently been elected to the Bavarian parliament, representing the AfD.
However, his arrest occurred just hours before he was set to gain parliamentary immunity as an elected member.
Police conducted a raid on the premises of the Teutonia Prag student fraternity in Würzburg following complaints from neighbors regarding the chants of “Sieg Heil.”. During the operation, several Nazi symbols were discovered, leading to a confirmation of the allegations.
“Sieg Heil” is a notorious Nazi slogan, and its use is prohibited in Germany due to its association with Nazi ideology.
An arrest warrant was issued, and Halemba was eventually apprehended near Stuttgart, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. He had been evading capture since October 26, leading prosecutors to consider him a flight risk.
Halemba is under investigation on charges of sedition and the possession of banned symbols, as Nazi iconography is outlawed in Germany.
Authorities also accuse him of collusion or attempts to influence other fraternity members to alter their statements.
Halemba expressed his views in a video posted on social media, asserting that the arrest warrant was “totally lawless” prior to his arrest.
His lawyer, Dubravko Mandic, denied the allegations, stating they had no basis in truth.
Katrin Ebner-Steiner, the leader of the AfD in the Bavarian parliament, condemned the prosecution as “politically motivated.”
The AfD has achieved significant election results in recent months, with strong showings in Bavaria and Hesse. The party, known for its anti-immigration stance, regularly ranks second in nationwide polls, and the next federal election in Germany is scheduled for 2025.
