Criminal groups launched a series of attacks by setting fire to at least 35 buses on Monday, as reported by the industry association representing bus companies in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

These coordinated attacks took place in the western part of the city, where rival criminal factions are engaged in a territorial struggle.

The incidents followed a police operation that resulted in the killing of the nephew of the leader of the state’s largest militia, according to law enforcement authorities.

The so-called militias in Rio, often comprised of current and former police officers, have evolved into a significant security threat in the region.

These militias have expanded their activities into various criminal enterprises originally established as self-defense forces for underprivileged neighborhoods plagued by drug gangs.

Rio Onibus, an industry group, disclosed that among the 35 torched vehicles, 20 were city buses, five belonged to the city’s rapid transit system, and the rest were chartered or tourism buses.

Governor Claudio Castro of Rio de Janeiro state characterized the operation as a significant blow to the militia.

He stated that the individual killed not only had connections to the militia’s leader but also served as the militia’s chief instigator in the ongoing turf wars that cause fear and distress among Rio’s residents.

The bus attacks disrupted Rio’s bus rapid transit system, causing difficulties for residents and workers commuting in the affected region. Public school classes in the area had to be canceled as well.

The Military Police reported the arrest of 12 individuals involved in the bus fires, and they also prevented 15 individuals from setting a cargo truck on fire at one of the city’s main entry points.
