Three of the world’s most influential women, Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney, and Melinda French Gates, have shared their commitment to ending child marriage within a generation in an exclusive interview with BBC 100 Women.
The trio, who announced a collaborative effort between their foundations to combat child marriage last year, spoke during a visit to Malawi and South Africa.
According to Girls Not Brides, Malawi, where the interview took place, has one of the highest child marriage rates in Eastern and Southern Africa, with 42% of girls married by the age of 18.
The three women are actively involved in projects addressing various aspects of the issue, such as education, legal rights, and healthcare.
The women believe the problem can be solved much sooner with global prioritization and collaboration despite the UN’s warning that at the current rate, child marriage may persist for 300 years.
