Cornell student held over slurs to Jewish peers
Law enforcement officials have apprehended a Cornell University student who stands accused of making violent threats towards Jewish classmates during the weekend in New York.
An individual using the username “Hamas” issued threats to shoot Jewish students at the prestigious institution on the website Greekrank. The suspect, identified as Patrick Dai, is a 21-year-old third-year student at Cornell University.
The FBI has charged Mr. Dai with making threats to kill or harm others through interstate communications. This offense carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years. He is scheduled to appear in a Syracuse court on Wednesday.
The threats posted by Mr. Dai included plans to attack a university building, particularly one housing a kosher cafeteria adjacent to the Cornell Jewish Center.
Governor Kathy Hochul, during a visit to the Cornell campus on Monday, expressed her commitment to combating hate and bias wherever it arises.
The Cornell Daily Sun, the college newspaper, reported on a series of antisemitic comments found on Greekrank, a platform unrelated to the university but used by many of its students for discussions related to fraternity and sorority life.
One user, identified as “Hamas,” posted threats with derogatory language targeting Jewish individuals and including threats of violence, stalking, rape, and bringing a gun to campus to harm Jewish people.
These threats have caused immense fear among Jewish students at Cornell, with concerns about their safety on campus.
The incident at Cornell University is part of a larger trend of increasing antisemitic incidents across the United States.
FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before a congressional committee, indicating that antisemitic abuse had reached “historic levels” in the country, with Jewish Americans representing a disproportionate number of religious-based hate crimes.
The Biden administration has taken steps to address this issue by enhancing communication with local, state, and federal authorities to combat antisemitism and hate speech on college campuses.
Tensions related to the Israel-Gaza conflict have also led to incidents on US campuses, including the projection of messages deemed antisemitic and the rescinding of job offers for students expressing certain views on the conflict.
