Crisis at Congo Recruitment: 37 Lives Lost in Stampede
In Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, a tragic stampede claimed the lives of thirty-seven youths during an overnight army recruitment drive in a stadium, officials reported on Tuesday.
The central African nation, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, had recently announced plans to recruit 1,500 individuals aged between 18 and 25.
Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso confirmed the “tragedy,” revealing the death toll and noting an unspecified number of injuries among others present.
“A crisis unit has been set up under the authority of the prime minister,” a statement added.
Prospective recruits were instructed to head to the Michel d’Ornano stadium in the center of Brazzaville.
As per local residents, a significant number of individuals were still present in the stadium on Monday night when the stampede erupted.
Reports suggest that some individuals attempted to forcibly open gates, leading to many being trampled in the ensuing chaos, though specific details of the incident are unclear. Independent verification of the details by AFP was not possible.
