It is highly unlikely that Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will be willing to accept the 2.2 million Palestinians who may face displacement from the Gaza Strip as a result of the Israel-Hamas war, according to reports.

Nancy Okail, the President and CEO of the Center for International Policy, a progressive nonprofit in Washington, DC, stated that in her assessment, the likelihood of this happening is extremely low, with a 95 percent chance of it not occurring.

“She added that the potential for domestic unrest in Egypt due to an influx of Palestinian refugees outweighs any political benefits.

The idea of a large-scale displacement from Gaza, a densely populated area on Egypt’s northeast border, has raised concerns within el-Sisi’s government.

On October 24, +972 Magazine and its affiliated publication Local Call reported on a leaked document allegedly from Israel’s Ministry of Intelligence, which detailed a proposal to “evacuate” all Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt.

There are rumors that Israeli leaders may be trying to persuade Cairo to accept displaced Palestinians by offering debt relief, as Egypt’s external debt stands at around $160 billion.

Furthermore, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly sought support from European leaders to convince el-Sisi to take in refugees from Gaza, although el-Sisi has thus far rejected this idea.

Timothy Kaldas, an expert on Egypt’s political economy at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, remarked, ‘It is entirely understandable why both Egyptians and Palestinians are concerned that some Israeli leaders are actively seeking to forcibly and permanently displace Palestinians from Gaza.'”

He emphasized that Palestinians should retain the option to seek asylum in neighboring countries, even though Egypt and Israel are currently denying them this protection.

“Palestinians should have the freedom to make the choice to relocate to Sinai and find a safe refuge. They should not be compelled to endure indiscriminate bombardment in Gaza,” Kaldas stated.

In 1948, during the establishment of the state of Israel, a significant number of Palestinians were forced to leave their homeland, a traumatic event they describe as the Nakba, or “catastrophe.”

Today, a majority of the population in Gaza consists of the descendants of those who were displaced during the Nakba.

Unfortunately, they now face the possibility of permanent displacement once again, a violation of international law classified as a war crime.

The issue of Palestinian rights has consistently garnered strong support in Egypt, as noted by Okail.

If President el-Sisi were to yield to the pressure to assimilate the population of Gaza, it could potentially spark widespread outrage and lead to protests.
