Fagradalsfjall: Iceland issues emergency over volcano eruption fears
Iceland has declared a state of emergency due to concerns about a potential volcanic eruption, prompting the evacuation of thousands in the town of Grindavík.
The Icelandic Met Office is monitoring increased seismic activity around the Fagradalsfjall volcano, suggesting the possible spread of magma underground.
The closure of the Blue Lagoon landmark and over 20,000 recorded tremors in southwest Iceland have raised alarms.
The Civil Protection Agency ordered the evacuation of Grindavík as a preventive measure, emphasizing it’s not an immediate danger but urging residents to remain calm.
Iceland, with around 30 active volcanic sites, faces ongoing geological activity.
