A tragic incident unfolded when a grenade, given as a birthday gift, detonated and killed Major Hennadiy Chastyakov, a close aide to Ukraine’s armed forces leader, Valery Zaluzhny.

The unfortunate event occurred when Major Chastyakov, aged 39, was celebrating his birthday with his son and began unwrapping presents from his colleagues.

Tragically, the grenade exploded, fatally wounding Major Chastyakov and seriously injuring his 13-year-old son.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, explained that the boy had inadvertently tampered with the grenade’s pin. When Major Chastyakov tried to remove it, the explosion occurred.

Authorities have described the incident as a “tragic accident,” urging the public to await the official investigation’s results. The police noted that the explosion was a result of the careless handling of ammunition.

However, it was later revealed that five additional grenades were discovered in the apartment. These grenades were identified as gifts from a colleague in the army.

Two similar grenades were also found during a search of the colleague, described as an army colonel. Photos from the scene showed grenades on the apartment floor alongside other gift bags, indicating that Major Chastyakov had brought the grenades home in a bag that included a bottle of whisky.

Major Chastyakov’s unexpected death is a significant loss to the Ukrainian military, leaving many in mourning.

His passing comes in the wake of recent setbacks, including a missile strike that claimed the lives of 19 soldiers during a Russian attack on an awards ceremony near the front lines in the Zaporizhzhia region.

This incident has raised questions among Ukrainian commentators about the official explanation, with some speculating whether the grenade explosion was an attack targeting General Zaluzhny himself, under the assumption that he may have attended his aide’s birthday celebrations.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia’s invasion forces continues, with differing perspectives on the current state of the war’s progression.
