Iceland declared a state of emergency on Friday following a series of powerful earthquakes on the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula, raising the potential for a volcanic eruption.

The Icelandic Met Office recorded approximately 1,400 earthquakes, with an additional 800 in the first 14 hours of Friday over the 24 hours leading up to Thursday at noon.

Seven of Thursday’s earthquakes had a magnitude of four or higher, occurring on the peninsula between Sýlingarfell and Eldvörp.

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management declared a state of emergency for civil defense, warning that the seismic activity could lead to an eruption, and the Icelandic Met Office suggested an eruption could occur “in several days.”

Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s largest manmade geothermal mineral bath located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, announced its closure until 7 am on November 16 due to safety precautions.

Grindavik, a village near the earthquake swarm area, with 4,000 residents, has evacuation plans in place in case of an eruption.

The Icelandic Met Office explained that if magma accumulates underground at a depth of around five kilometers (3.1 miles) and moves towards the surface, it could result in a volcanic eruption.

The most likely scenario, they noted, is that it would take several days for magma to reach the surface. Additionally, if a fissure were to appear in the current seismic activity area, lava would flow southeast and west but not towards Grindavik.
