Italy mafia trial: 200 jailed to 2,200 years for mob links
Over 200 defendants in one of Italy’s largest mafia trials in decades have been sentenced to a combined total of over 2,200 years in prison.
The three-year trial involved individuals connected to the ‘Ndrangheta, facing charges ranging from extortion to drug trafficking.
Among the sentenced individuals was former Italian senator Giancarlo Pittelli. The ‘Ndrangheta is considered one of Europe’s most powerful criminal organizations, controlling a significant portion of the continent’s cocaine market.
The trial highlighted the group’s extensive influence over southern Italy’s politics and society. The judges overseeing the case were provided police protection due to safety concerns.
