Letters from Seven Years’ War released 250 years later
Letters that were confiscated by the British Royal Navy during the Seven Years’ War, preventing them from reaching French sailors, have been opened for the first time.
These letters were meant for the crew aboard the French warship Galatee but tragically never reached their intended recipients dating from 1757-8.
These 104 letters were found in the National Archives in Kew and were discovered by Prof Renaud Morieux, a University of Cambridge academic.
They offer a poignant glimpse into the lives and emotions of people separated by war and time. The collection represents universal human experiences of love, longing, and hope.
These experiences transcend both 18th-century France and the current era as Prof Morieux highlights. They provide insight into how people have historically coped with significant life challenges, much like the challenges brought on by the ongoing pandemic.
These letters are a reminder of the enduring human connection that persists through handwritten correspondence while today’s technology offers instant communication.
