Nepal Earthquake Forces Thousands into Chilly Night
In a remote mountainous area in western Nepal, a powerful earthquake on Friday left thousands of residents with no choice but to endure a bitterly cold night outdoors, as their homes were severely damaged.
The quake resulted in 157 fatalities and over 300 injuries.
Authorities have reported that search and rescue operations are nearing completion. The primary emphasis has now shifted to ensuring shelter for those left homeless and organizing the distribution of essential provisions.
Regrettably, rescue teams have conveyed their shortage of tents, leaving thousands of displaced individuals exposed to the frigid overnight temperatures, either sleeping under the open sky or relying on makeshift shelters.
One sufferer, who lost her sister in the earthquake, shared her grief: “We have been forced to live in this situation. We have lost everything. There is no food and no shelter. My sister left us all. We need help.”
The relief initiatives are primarily concentrated on the most isolated regions within the two districts that bore the brunt of the 6.3-magnitude earthquake: Jajarkot and Rukum West.
Accounts of harrowing ordeals, miraculous survival tales, near misses, and the heartbreaking accounts of losing loved ones and friends are emerging.
Among those affected, Baljit Mahar, who tragically lost his seven-year-old son, is among the survivors sharing their stories.
“We could not save him, while all the other six members of the family were able to rush out as soon as the earthquake jolted us from our sleep,” Mahar told Reuters in the remote village of Chiuri in the hilly Jajarkot district.
He pulled his son’s body from the crumbled façade of their single-storey mud and stone house.
“All my belongings and clothes are under the debris, I have been left without anything,” Mahar added.
Baljeet BK, another survivor hailing from Rukum, has made a heartfelt plea for government aid to provide shelter to the individuals who have been left without homes.
“There is no food to eat and no shelter to stay in. People are staying outside in the open. We have to stay in this cold. Entire houses have gone away.”
In the severely affected regions of Jajarkot, preparations are underway for the mass cremation of earthquake victims, compounding the anguish for those who have lost loved ones. Meanwhile, the persistent threat of aftershocks looms, intensifying the distress.
In Jajarkot and West Rukum, officials have advised residents to refrain from returning to their homes due to the ongoing seismic activity.
The area has experienced over 250 aftershocks since Friday, with six registering above 4 in magnitude, as reported by the National Earthquake Measurement and Research Center.
The Nepali government has accepted assistance from friendly nations and committed to rebuilding the affected areas within one year.
Furthermore, they have assured free medical treatment for the injured. Citizens have been cautioned to remain vigilant against fraudulent calls offering relief.
