Uttarakhand tunnel collapse: Rescuers race to save 40 workers stuck in India tunnel
A critical rescue operation is underway in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand as 40 workers remain trapped inside a collapsed tunnel since Sunday morning.
The workers, involved in tunnel construction, became stranded when a landslide caused a portion of the tunnel to cave in. Officials have established contact with the workers and are providing essential supplies such as food, water, and oxygen.
The rescue teams plan to use a 900mm diameter metal pipe to reach the trapped individuals, with hopes that they can navigate through it to safety.
The incident occurred in the Silkyara tunnel, a part of a national highway project aiming to enhance connectivity to significant pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand.
The state, known for its sacred Hindu sites amid its mountainous terrain, faces a race against time to rescue the workers by Tuesday night or Wednesday.
Authorities are utilizing excavators and heavy machinery to clear the debris, with a pipeline repurposed to supply essential provisions to the trapped workers.
State and national disaster relief teams are collaborating on the rescue efforts, ensuring every possible measure is taken to secure the workers’ safety despite the challenging circumstances.
