In a setback for Blue Origin’s ambitious space tourism plans, the much-anticipated return to flight for the New Shepard rocket has been delayed.

The Jeff Bezos-founded company announced that the uncrewed science mission, scheduled for Monday morning, was scrubbed due to a ground system issue that the team is actively troubleshooting.

Initially delayed by an hour because of cold temperatures at the West Texas launch site, Blue Origin had hoped to resume operations after months of recovery from a failed uncrewed test flight in September 2022. During that incident, the New Shepard rocket experienced a failure one minute into the flight, prompting the capsule’s launch abort system to engage successfully, ensuring a safe landing for the capsule but resulting in the destruction of the rocket.

The investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed that the engine nozzle failed due to higher-than-anticipated temperatures. Blue Origin subsequently implemented design changes to the combustion chamber and adjusted operating parameters to enhance safety.

Jeff Bezos, speaking in a recent podcast interview, emphasized the importance of the escape system in ensuring the safety of passengers on New Shepard, acknowledging the inherent risks of space travel. He stated, “A tourism vehicle has to be designed…to be as safe as one can make it. You can’t make it perfectly safe. It’s impossible.”

Blue Origin has scheduled another launch attempt for Tuesday at 11:37 AM ET, which will be streamed live on the company’s website. Success in this mission could pave the way for the company to resume space trips for thrill-seekers, following 22 consecutive successful missions before the 2022 failure.

The delay comes at a crucial time for Blue Origin, which is also working on the development of the New Glenn rocket, capable of carrying large payloads into orbit. Bezos expressed nervousness about the upcoming first launch of New Glenn, underscoring the inherent anxiety associated with space missions, especially inaugural ones.

As Blue Origin aims to overcome these challenges, the space community and enthusiasts eagerly await the resolution of the ground system issue and the successful return to flight for the New Shepard rocket.
