“Come with me, come with me. Slowly, slowly.” The entire area was covered in smoke, sirens were blaring, and sprinkler water was spraying everywhere. I could hear a person speaking again.

Then a man in shorts and a checkered shirt appears, carrying a gas mask and an oxygen tank on his back. He is instructed to descend and momentarily crawl through a closed door that has been sliced in half in order to escape the flooded hallway.

It was the kind of incident that could have been the basis of an exciting rescue film. However, it was genuine. It happened on Saturday during the bold and meticulous rescue of a resident trapped inside a burning flat of a medium-rise residential building in International City by Dubai’s Civil Defence and Dubai Police rescue teams. There were no props involved.

There are firemen who can be heard telling the man to move carefully, a rescuer who was leading the way, another who was supporting the victim’s back, and yet others who were assuring him that there was nothing to worry about.

The man, clearly stunned and disoriented, is seen pausing to collect his breath before descending the stairs from the upper level of the charred structure. The firefighters brought him outside to safety after making sure he was okay.

An official from DCD verified to Khaleej Times that the fire was successfully contained and that the building was evacuated to guarantee the safety of its occupants.

However, two residents were hurt and one resident passed away. To put out the fire, firefighters were sent to the scene right away. The cause of the fire has not yet been verified by the authorities.
