Indian parliament recently witnessed a chaotic incident, when two men barged into the chamber, shouting slogans and releasing colored gas. Pictures show MPs and security trying to catch one of the intruders, who was leaping from table to table. The men were eventually overpowered by security and taken away.

This breach happened on the 22nd anniversary of a militant attack on India’s parliament. Lawmakers mentioned that the intruders jumped from the visitors’ gallery into the well of the house. It’s unclear what their motive was.

The incident took place during a session in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament. Both houses were briefly suspended before resuming the session.

“We are investigating the matter and have asked Delhi Police to join the inquiry,” Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla said. He added that according to the preliminary investigation, the smoke sprayed in the house appeared to be “harmless”.

Two other people – a man and a woman – have also been detained for protesting outside the parliament by setting off canisters of colored gas. They were pictured being led away by police.

“Two people jumped from the public gallery and there was smoke. There was chaos all around. Both of them were overpowered by security officials,” lawmaker Danish Ali told reporters outside parliament.

Two men disrupted India’s parliament on the 22nd anniversary of a tragic attack that claimed the lives of 14 people, including five attackers. Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other leaders paid tribute to the victims of the 2001 parliament attack.

Karti Chidambaram, a Congress party MP, shared that he was waiting to speak when the chaos unfolded in the parliament.

“Suddenly, it appeared that one person had fallen from the visitors’ gallery. Then we realized that it was a deliberate act of him jumping into the well. There was another person, both of them pulled out canisters that were emitting yellow smoke,” he said.
