King Abdullah of Jordan emphasized the necessity for the international community to press for a rapid ceasefire in Gaza and the protection of civilians during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday in Aqaba.
He issued a dire warning to the people of Gaza, who are experiencing a humanitarian crisis, saying that further Israeli aggression will have catastrophic effects on the entire area, according to the Jordan News Agency. He also urged prompt action to guarantee that relief reaches the Gaza population.
The monarch denounced violations of Christian and Muslim holy places in Jerusalem as well as acts of violence by radical settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, saying that these actions could spark instability.
He reiterated Jordan’s opposition to Palestinians being forcibly relocated from the West Bank and Gaza Strip and issued a dire warning against any attempts to obstruct the West Bank and Gaza Strip from working together to establish a Palestinian state.
“There will be no peace nor stability without a just solution to the Palestinian issue on the basis of a two-state solution that fulfills the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people,” King Abdullah said.
He also emphasized how crucial it is for France and the EU to step up their efforts in fostering a political environment that can result in a fair, all-encompassing, and long-lasting peace in order to promote a two-state solution.
Macron praised Jordan for its attempts to support the establishment of peace based on a two-state solution that can ensure stability and security in the area. He also emphasized the work Jordan is undertaking to provide medical assistance through two field hospitals in the Strip, as well as the critical role Jordan plays in enhancing international coordination of the distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza and optimizing the benefits.
The president stated that France hopes to send cancer-stricken Gazan children to France for medical care, adding that other European nations’ governments also wish to treat injured Gazan children.
“France is keen on increasing humanitarian aid for Gaza, in coordination with Jordan, and welcomes the announcement of procedures to facilitate aid delivery to Gaza through the Karm Abu Salem crossing,” Macron added.
Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Alexis Le Cour Grandmaison, France’s ambassador to Jordan, and other representatives of both nations were also present during the summit between the leaders.
