Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has declared success in snap parliamentary elections, asserting that his party is on track to secure a clear majority. Projections suggest that his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is poised to capture nearly 47% of the vote.

Meanwhile, opposition parties united under the Serbia against Violence (SPN) alliance trail behind with approximately 23%. However, allegations of electoral fraud in favor of the government have been raised by the opposition.

Preliminary results indicate that the Serbian Progressive Party is projected to secure the 250 seats in the National Assembly.

Mr Vucic hailed the results. “My job was to do everything in my power to secure an absolute majority,” he told supporters, although he was not running for election. Dressed in a grey sweater, he stood between Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and the contentious Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik.

In the local elections on Sunday, the Serbia against Violence Alliance (SPN), a loose opposition group, aimed to take control of Belgrade. The alliance emerged following two mass shootings in May that led to widespread protests, resulting in the death of 19 people, including 10 at a school in Belgrade.

However, despite the SPN’s aspirations, the initial results indicated that Mr. Vucic’s party held a slight lead in the capital.

In a statement, SPN claimed electoral fraud. The coalition said: “More than 40,000 non-residents were brought to Belgrade”.

The opposition called for the cancellation of the election results in the capital. They also hinted at the possibility of organizing protests. Overnight results from the 8,273 polling stations across Serbia affirmed the ruling party’s advantage.

The Serbian Progressive Party has been in control since 2012. Despite this, there have been three elections in the past three years. In addition to voting for the national parliament, Serbians on Sunday were also determining the leadership of 65 local authorities.
