Biden decides on how to give response to attack on US troops in Jordan
On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden announced that he has decided on how to respond to a drone attack that killed US service members in Jordan. He is considering punitive measures against Iran-backed militias while avoiding the escalation of a broader war.
Biden, addressing reporters before leaving the White House for a campaign trip to Florida, did not provide details about his decision but mentioned consultations with top advisers.
He emphasized that the United States does not desire a wider war in the Middle East, aligning with statements from other officials who expressed the country’s reluctance to engage in war with Iran. Biden has been assessing his options, and while retaliatory strikes are anticipated, the timing of the response remains unclear.
“I don’t think we need a wider war in the Middle East. That’s not what I’m looking for,” said Biden.
When asked if he had decided how to respond to the attacks, Biden answered with a “yes.” Further questioned about Iran’s responsibility, Biden stated, “I do hold them responsible in the sense that they’re supplying the weapons” to those who carried out the attacks.
Officials reported that Iran-backed militants carried out a drone attack on US troops in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border, resulting in the death of three US service members and at least 34 wounded on Sunday.
