US personnel sustain injuries on a missile strike on Al Asad Airbase in Iraq
In a targeted assault on the Al Asad airbase in western Iraq, Iran-backed militias launched ballistic missiles and rockets on Saturday evening, resulting in injuries to a yet-to-be-specified number of US military personnel. The US Central Command reported that the injured individuals are currently undergoing evaluation for traumatic brain injuries.
Islamic Resistance greoup in Iraq is responsible for the attacks. This group has asserted responsibility for other recent attacks against US forces, and the Al Asad base has been a frequent target in recent years.
The assault is part of a series of attacks on US positions in Iraq and Syria by Iran’s proxies in the region since the onset of the Israel-Gaza conflict last October.
On Saturday, the US military, along with its allies, intervened once again to thwart Houthi missile attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.
US forces executed an airstrike against the Houthis, an Iran-backed rebel group controlling much of western Yemen. The US military reported targeting a launch site after identifying an anti-ship missile aimed into the Gulf of Aden and prepared for launch.
In recent days, the Iranian military has conducted multiple missile strikes against targets in Syria, Iraq, and Pakistan.
In a separate development on Saturday, Iran accused Israel of conducting an airstrike in the Syrian capital Damascus, resulting in the death of five senior members of Iran’s security forces.
