Zelensky accuses Russia of attacking Red Cross vehicles in East Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that a Russian attack on International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) vehicles in eastern Ukraine on Thursday killed three people.
“Today, the occupier attacked the vehicles of the International Committee of the Red Cross humanitarian mission in Donetsk region,” Zelensky said.
Artillery shelling killed three Ukrainian ICRC workers and wounded two others, according to Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliamentary commissioner for human rights. The attack occurred in the village of Virolyubivka, located a few kilometers from the front line in Donetsk.
Russia did not immediately comment, as it often claims to target only military sites. The UN Humanitarian Mission to Ukraine reported that 50 workers were killed or injured in Ukraine in 2023, including 11 who died while on duty.
“Since the beginning of the year, this repeated pattern of attacks appears to have intensified,” the UN humanitarian coordinator Denise Brown said in a statement in February.
