Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV utilized his address on Sunday, to call for peace. Specifically, the pope referenced the disputes involving Thailand and Cambodia, along with Gaza.

“I am watching with profound worry the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the civilian population is being devastated by starvation and remains under threat from violence and death,” Leo stated. “I reiterate my sincere request for a ceasefire, the liberation of hostages, and complete adherence to international humanitarian law.”

Leo urged political leaders to resolve the conflicts, stating, “I call on all involved in each conflict to acknowledge this dignity and to stop any actions that breach it.”

The pontiff expressed his wish for conversation and healing for those impacted by the conflicts at the Thailand-Cambodia border, “particularly the children and displaced families,” as well as for “the victims of violence in southern Syria.”

A comparable message was conveyed during Leo’s speech on Sunday, July 20. After his weekly Angeles address, the pope voiced his sadness regarding the bombing of a Catholic church in Gaza on Thursday, July 17. The Vatican reported that three individuals lost their lives at the Holy Family Church.

Reports indicate that around 600 individuals displaced by the Israel-Hamas conflict were seeking refuge at the church. Multiple individuals were hurt, including the priest of the parish.

Leo described the conflict as “barbaric” and stated, “this act contributes to the ongoing military assaults on the civilian population and places of worship in Gaza.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement regarding the attacks.

“Israel expresses its deep regret that a stray shell struck Gaza’s Holy Family Church,” the statement noted. “Every innocent life taken is a tragedy.” “We partake in the sorrow of the families and the congregation.”
