WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has announced a new $250 “Visa Integrity Fee” for foreign travelers, starting October 1, 2025. Experts warn this step could further hurt the United States’ struggling tourism industry.
Tourism to the US is already declining due to President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies and tense relations with several countries. In July alone, international arrivals fell 3.1 percent to 19.2 million, the fifth month in a row of decline this year.
The new fee will apply to travelers from countries outside the US Visa Waiver Program, including Mexico, Argentina, India, Brazil, and China. Once implemented, the total cost of a US visa will jump to $442, making it the world’s most expensive visa.
Industry groups have raised an alarm over the decision. The US Travel Association said the extra cost will add “more pressure” on the already struggling tourism sector, which is trying to recover from global economic challenges.
Experts also fear that even big upcoming events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics may not be enough to reverse the decline. The World Travel and Tourism Council expects international tourist spending in the US to hit $169 billion in 2025, still lower than last year.
Analysts believe Trump’s policies have already damaged America’s image as a travel destination, and the new visa fee could make things even worse.
