World leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa have joined on a video conference to launch the global push to accelerate work to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The leaders have pledged the international community to accelerate work on Novel coronavirus tests, drugs and vaccines and also to share them with the other countries around the world.

On the occasion French President Macron said: “We will continue now to mobilise all G7 and G20 countries so they get behind this initiative. And I hope we’ll manage to reconcile around this joint initiative both China and the US, because this is about saying: the fight against COVID-19 is a common human good and there should be no division in order to win this battle.”

Leaders from Asia, the Middle East were also among those who joined a video conference to launch what the World Health Organization (WHO) had billed a “landmark collaboration” to fight the COVID-19.

It is pertinent to mention here that the United States of America did not take part in this initiative as US President Donald Trump has criticized the response of WHO to the COVID-19 and announced to suspend US funding to the WHO.

US mission in Geneva said in an email  reply to a query “there will be no US official participation.”

“We look forward to learning more about this initiative in support of international cooperation to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 as soon as possible.” he added.
