Senior executives at Amazon’s business in India have been charged after two individuals reportedly utilized the website as part of a marijuana smuggling operation. Two men were arrested last week in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh for allegedly trafficking 20kg of the narcotic to other Indian states.

According to police the males allegedly exchanged cannabis on the site under the premise of selling stevia leaves, a natural sweetener.

Amazon stated that it was sharing information with law enforcement. “Amazon has zero-tolerance for misconduct and takes strict action against individuals or third-parties for violation of our policies or applicable laws,” said the company.

It said it does not allow the listing and sale of illegal products and it takes strict action against sellers found to be breaking its rules on illicit goods. The executive directors of Amazon India have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act

Police claimed in a statement that this was due to “differences in answers in documents provided by the company in response to police questions and facts unearthed by discussion,”

The number of executives charged has not been disclosed by the authorities. A total of 1,000kg of marijuana worth around $148,000 (£110,000) was allegedly sold over the website.
