Amazon launches Prime Video app for macOS with offline downloads

Amazon launched a Prime Video app for macOS users today. It can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store.

Prime Video app for macOS supports offline downloads. While streaming online or downloading, you can choose your preferred video quality. Currently, at the best setting, Amazon estimates approximately 5.9GB per hour of data usage while streaming online. But when it comes to offline downloading the figures are slightly lower, the estimated data usage is 2.9GB per hour.

When setting the app for the first time, it will ask you if you want to receive notifications regarding recommendations based on your taste and other alerts. The rest of the setup is pretty much the same as on other platforms.

Strangely, the app on macOS does not support a full-screen feature, but when you play a movie or a TV show it will automatically switch to full-screen mode. It also supports native macOS features including Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode. It also comes with its own exclusive features like X-Ray with cast and behind-the-scenes information.

Apart from its basin Prime Subscription, like Netflix, it also enables you to purchase or rent specific content from the app’s dedicated store tab. The transactions will be carried out using your payment method which you entered while signing up for the first time.

Other features include autoplay, subtitle preferences, and parental controls. You can also view all your devices the have been registered to your Prime account. For additional account settings, you have to log in to your account using a browser.

To get the most of the features of the new Prime Video app, the new 16-inch MacBook Pro will be the ideal choice for a portable watching experience. The new app is supported on macOS Big Sur and later.
