ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman on Friday said the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) government had taken Rs20.7 trillion debt in just three years.

“By the end of the PPP government, the country’s total debt was 16.2 trillion rupees. In 2018, loans reached Rs 29.8 trillion. In 2021, Pakistan’s total debt and liabilities have exceeded Rs 50.5 trillion. Those who said they would not take loans have taken loans of Rs 20.7 trillion in just 3 years,” wrote Sherry Rehman in a tweet.

The PPP leader said within three years the government had put an additional burden of Rs91,000 on each Pakistani.

“This government has increased the country’s total debt by 70%. Earlier, every Pakistani was indebted to the tune of Rs 144,000 which has become Rs 235,000 after the debts of this government. In just three years, this government has imposed an additional burden of Rs 91,000 on every Pakistani,” she tweeted.

On November 25, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal had said that the Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government had thrown the country into a debt trap.
