A fox that bit a lawmaker and at least eight other people near the US Capitol was exterminated after being diagnosed with rabies, according to local health officials.

“The fox that was apprehended yesterday tested positive for the rabies virus, according to the DC Public Health lab.” “All human victims who were bitten by the fox are being contacted,” DC Health stated in a statement.

The female fox was “responsible for 9 confirmed attacks on Capitol Hill,” according to the health agency, and was “humanely terminated so that rabies testing could be done.”

The test resulted with a positive result on Wednesday evening.

The fox’s “kits were located and caught” Wednesday morning, according to the health office, and “officials are working to identify future actions” for them.

After receiving “multiple complaints of violent fox interactions on or around the grounds of the United States Capitol,” D.C. Animal Control apprehended the fox on Tuesday.
Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., was one of those who had a run-in with the fox, saying he was nibbled in the leg on his way to work on Monday.

On Tuesday night, Bera, a medical practitioner, informed a news agency that he had begun rabies prophylactic therapy as a precaution. A round of seven shots is included in the therapy, with three rounds of follow-up shots required over the next 14 days.

Bera cautioned, “You don’t want to play around with wild animal bites or anything like that.”

If left untreated, rabies is usually deadly.

Animal control is distributing fliers near the Capitol informing residents and employees of the fox’s positive rabies status and urging anybody who may have been exposed to contact the health department.
