Liberal media critic Eric Boehlert dies

Eric Boehlert, 57, was also a fellow at Media Matters, a leftist media watchdog. His family, which included a wife, Tracy Breslin, and two children, recalled him lovingly.

According to his relatives, a leftist media critic who established Salon magazine was killed when he was struck by a NJ Transit train while riding his bicycle.

“Through his journalism, social media, books, and appearances on CNN and MSNBC, Eric was an ardent advocate of democracy, social justice, and media truth,” said Boehlert’s family in a statement issued Wednesday.

“He was bold and clever in his study of media hypocrisies and double standards, and his contribution was invaluable.”

Boehlert also contributed to Rolling Stone and Billboard magazines.

Hillary Clinton, the former Democratic presidential contender, also commented on Boehlert’s death.

“.@EricBoehlert’s death is terrible news,” Clinton wrote on Twitter.

“I’m devastated for his family and friends and will miss his critical work to counteract misinformation and media bias. What a loss.”

“Just got crushing news from Tracy Breslin, wife of @EricBoehlert,” Soledad O’Brien, a television journalist, tweeted. “Died in a bike accident at the age of 57.” He adored his children, Jane and Ben, his dogs, bicycling, jogging, basketball, and close friends, and he was a tenacious and courageous defender of the truth.”
