
Sweden extradites genocide suspect to Rwanda
A Rwandan genocide suspect who has been dwelling in Sweden for greater than a decade became extradited Wednesday to his home country where he is predicted to stand trial over his alleged position in the 1994 massacres.
Jean-Paul Micomyiza, who misplaced his combat towards extradition in December, changed into handcuffs as he disembarked from a RwandAir plane and turned without delay taken away via policemen.
Micomyiza, aka Mico, is accused of involvement in the slaughter of approximately 800,000 human beings — commonly contributors of Rwanda’s minority Tutsi population but also Hutus — whilst he become a college scholar.
The suspect, now aged about 50, was a member of a committee “whose mission was to search and identify Tutsi civilians to be killed and thus played a big role in the genocide against the Tutsi”, the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) said in a statement.
NPPA spokesman Faustin Nkusi told AFP that the authorities would start preparing an indictment for a trial for Micomyiza after various procedures were completed.
The prosecution said it commended Sweden, where Micomyiza had been living since 2007, for its cooperation and its “contribution to the global effort to fight impunity”.
Sweden’s justice ministry showed the decision to extradite Micomyiza but refused to offer similar information about his lifestyle within the state.
Three Swedes of Rwandan starting place had been sentenced to existence in prison for taking element in the genocide.
