Turkey’s Foreign Ministry summoned Germany’s ambassador to Turkey on Friday in a dispute over Turkish businessman and campaigner Osman Kavala’s life sentence, according to the state-run TRT media.
Germany summoned Turkey’s ambassador to Berlin on Friday to express its displeasure with the Turkish activist’s sentence.
According to anonymous Turkish diplomatic sources, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry told the German diplomat that the ruling of the “independent Turkish judiciary” “cannot be questioned by any institution, authority, or country,” and that the ministry also rejected any attempt to intervene in Turkish judiciary and politics.
Christofer Burger, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, said that the Turkish ambassador to Berlin had been called for discussions on Friday morning.
On Monday, a Turkish court condemned Kavala to life in prison without the possibility of release after he was found guilty of attempting to topple the government during protests in 2013. For “aiding” the attempt, seven additional suspects were sentenced to 18 years in jail.
