A spring blizzard has knocked out electricity throughout many states in the north-eastern United States, with some areas receiving more than a foot of snow.

Around 300,000 consumers lost power, including 200,000 in New York state.

Residents as far south as Virginia were welcomed with cold blasts instead of spring.

The National Weather Service issued snow storm warnings for many more northeastern states (NWS).

Heavy, wet snow was expected to pull down tree branches, with the NWS warning of wind gusts up to 40mph (64km/h).
