Authorities say a Mexican lady was killed while trying to scale the US border wall in eastern Arizona after her leg got hooked in a climbing gear and she was left hanging upside down.
According to Border Patrol and Cochise County Sheriff’s Office authorities, an investigation is underway into the death of an undocumented immigrant 32 years old. Sheriff’s deputies said she hung upside down for “a long period of time” when her foot and leg got caught in the wall as she was trying to get down the US side.
The lady was taken to a hospital in the United States where she was declared dead on Monday night. At the request of a local Mexican embassy in Mexico City, the sheriff’s office will conduct an autopsy. Officials have been instructed by the woman’s family not to divulge any personal details about their loved one, according to the Tucson Star.
Sheriff Mark Dannels noted on Facebook that “these sorts of situations are not political; they are humanitarian realities that someone has lost a loved one in a horrible tragedy.” For the right reasons, we need to do better when it comes to finding solutions to the problems at our border. Regardless of our differences of view, we will continue to work together toward a common objective of border protection and security.”
At least 7,000 migrants are thought to have perished crossing the US-Mexico border since 1998, according to a Guardian investigation from 2021. Authorities found the corpses of 227 illegal immigrants crossing the Arizona-Mexico border in 2020, making it the worst year for migrants.
The border wall has also claimed the lives of migrants who were trying to pass it. A guy fell to his death from a barrier in Texas earlier this month. At the Tornillo port of entry, some 12 miles from Clint, a guy fell from the border wall and broke his right hand. Before he was sent back to Mexico, he was sent to a hospital for treatment.
There was no way to tell whether the place where the lady got entangled had any video security cameras. According to authorities, she was attempting to climb over a 30-foot (9-meter) tall steel pole that was installed on US Bureau of Land Management land in the Douglas region before Donald Trump’s presidency ended.
