According to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia and an Associated Press article, Gendron, an 18-year-old from Conklin, New York, was hospitalized for a mental health examination for one and a half days in June 2021 after making the threat against a high school in his hometown.
According to the Associated Press, New York State troopers rushed to a Conklin high school in Gendron’s hometown on June 8, 2021, after Gendron, then 17, reportedly “made threatening threats.” Payton Gendron arrives in Buffalo City Court during his arraignment on Saturday, May 14, 2022, in Buffalo, N.Y. According to a New York State Police spokeswoman, troopers were dispatched to Susquehanna High School in Conklin, New York, “to investigate a claim that a 17-year-old student had made a threatening comment.” The individual was not identified by name, according to the spokeswoman.
“The state police reacted,” Gramaglia stated at a press conference on Sunday. “They looked into it. They questioned the person and determined that it was necessary at the moment to bring that individual in for a mental health examination. State police performed their duties to the best of their abilities at the time.”
Later, Gramaglia added: “He was reviewed before being discharged. When we say ‘on the radar,’ we mean nothing was picked up by state police intelligence or FBI information. Nobody dialed 911. There were no complaints.” According to police, Gendron, 18, drove to Buffalo on Friday and opened fire at a Tops Friendly Market shop on Saturday, killing ten people and injuring at least three more.

Three of the four victims were killed.
Once inside, he exchanged fire with shop security guard Aaron Salter, a retired police officer, according to officials. Gramaglia claimed Salter fired several bullets at Gendron before the defendant fatally shot him.

According to officials, the suspect live-streamed a portion of the shooting on the social media site Twitch. According to a Twitch spokeswoman, the feed was shut down within two minutes. Gendron is reportedly said to have explained his ideas in a lengthy manifesto.
