After hospitalizations, Florida suspends an abortion clinic.

After two women who underwent operations at the clinic were hospitalized this year, Florida health regulators issued an emergency order suspending the facility’s license this weekend.

The state Agency for Health Care Administration has ordered the suspension of American Family Planning of Pensacola’s license, which will take effect on Saturday.

The clinic failed to monitor patients at all times, failed to submit medical records when patients were moved for more care, and failed to call patients within 24 hours after they left the clinic to assess their recovery, according to the agency’s directive, which was issued on Friday.

The concerns were operational flaws that “endangered the health, safety, and welfare” of the clinic’s patients, according to the study, and the clinic failed to disclose the occurrences to the state agency on time.

Clinic personnel persuaded a patient’s husband to drive her to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama, rather than a local hospital in Pensacola with which the clinic had a transfer arrangement, delaying her treatment. According to the emergency order, the woman needed to be resuscitated and a transfusion to replace blood loss at the Alabama hospital.

A patient with bleeding and low blood pressure was rushed to the emergency room of a Pensacola hospital in March. She required emergency surgery, and a hysterectomy was done. According to the emergency order, a third patient underwent uterine perforation repair last year.

The emergency order said, “Women undergoing abortions shall receive the degree of care and assistance authorized by law.”
