According to the prosecution, the Oregon romance novelist who wrote the fictional book “How to Murder Your Spouse” and is suspected of killing her husband in real life tripped up and confessed to the shooting by mistake.

Nancy Crampton Brophy, 71, who is suspected of killing her husband, reportedly went into detail about the shooting with a prisoner she was living with, according to Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Shawn Overstreet. On June 2, 2018, Nancy Crampton Brophy reportedly murdered her 63-year-old husband Daniel Brophy.

Authorities believe she committed the crime because she was facing financial difficulties and wanted the $1.5 million in insurance. According to authorities, Nancy Crampton Brophy shot Daniel Brophy in the back and then when he was on the floor.

According to Overstreet, Nancy Crampton Brophy made the remark to a cellmate by mistake, and the cellmate should testify after Nancy Crampton Brophy’s attorneys present their case. Overstreet told the court about the supposed conversation between Nancy Crampton Brophy and her cellmate.

‘I was this far away when the shooting happened,’ Ms. Brophy responded, holding her arms apart like a wingspan,” Overstreet stated. According to Overstreet, Nancy Crampton Brophy then reversed herself and indicated that the gunfire occurred at close range.

Nancy Crampton Brophy appeared embarrassed after making the remark, according to Andrea Jacobs, who claimed their relationship became “extremely uneasy.” Overstreet added, “Ms. Jacobs said that it became really uncomfortable.”

During opening arguments in the trial, the defense claimed that Nancy Crampton Brophy was at a Starbucks when the shooting happened and showed communications between the partners to indicate that they were on good terms.
