After images of Pennsylvania Senate candidate Kathy Barnette from that day appeared on the morning of the state’s primary election, her campaign maintained she was at the Jan. 6, 2021 demonstration in Washington, D.C., to “demand electoral transparency,” but did not breach the law.
“Kathy was in DC to support President Trump and demand electoral accountability,” according to a Barnette campaign official. “Any claim that she engaged in or encouraged property damage is purposefully untrue.”
NBC News revealed photographs of Barnette marching in D.C. on Jan. 6 among members of the “Proud Boys,” an extreme right-wing organization that had a key part in the Capitol attack, on Monday morning.
Barnette’s team also denied any link to the Proud Boys, claiming that “Americans demand transparency to restore trust in our electoral system.”
There is no proof that Barnette entered the United States Capitol on January 6 or violated any laws. The attack on the Capitol on January 6 happened after former President Donald Trump erroneously claimed for months that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
That morning, Trump conducted a rally near the White House, where he reiterated his bogus electoral claims. On the same day, a crowd of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol while Congress was tallying electoral votes in the presidential election. As rioters flooded both the House and Senate chambers, hundreds of politicians were forced to run and shelter within the Capitol complex.
The images of Barnette in D.C. on January 6 come as she has risen to become a prominent contender in the Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.
Trump-endorsed candidate Mehmet Oz received 22% of the vote, former hedge fund CEO Dave McCormick received 20%, Barnette received 19%, 19% supported other candidates, and 18% were unsure.
Barnette has faced frequent incoming assault from her challengers and other Republicans, who are concerned about her lack of vetting and previous contentious statements, as well as concerns that she is too extremist to win a statewide general election in a purple state like Pennsylvania.
Trump himself stated in a statement that Oz is the finest candidate for the main election.
“Kathy Barnette will never win the General Election against the Radical Left Democrats,” Trump said on Thursday. “She has a lot of stuff in her history that hasn’t been fully addressed or vetted.”
“Everyone is coming after me,” Barnette said on the campaign trail in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. “What makes you believe that? Because I’m winning, which is a problem.”
